Along with any permits, there are required documents which will need to be presented to the customs department along with a passport.

These are:

Original Bill of Lading or a Telex Release: this a document that proves a carrier has received cargo in a particular location/port and that freight has been paid for in full. This enables the ships agent to release the vehicle to the consignee.

Registration papers: these are related to the vehicle registration, and provide proof of ownership, age and status of the vehicle. The original V5C (log book) will need to be presented to the clearing agent in order to have the vehicle released.

Invoices: Proving purchase of the vehicle and Freight paid at origin

Passport: A copy of the photo page of the consignee’s passport is required showing their signature

Power of Attorney: A fully completed POA is also required to be filled in by the consignee, signatures must match the photo page of the passport

Based on all of the above being in order the vehicle will be released by customs in Namibia, it can then be taken to License department where either a temporary or permanent Namibian license plate will be issued.

Further, customs charges will be agreed based on the value and age of the vehicle.

Other key points to note are that a person importing a vehicle in to Namibia must have owned it for at least 12 months and cannot sell the car for a further 24 months after move completion.

Namibia is a popular country for international car shipping and when moving to the country it is important to be aware of the most up to date rules and regulations.
